Tipping The Velvet was a BBC adaptation of Sarah Waters first published book, airing in 3 parts in 2002. Like Fingersmith, this story was set in Victorian England.
The story follows the life of "Nan Astley" played by the beautiful Rachel Stirling. "Nan" lives in Whistable with her family, helping in their oyster restaurant. To escape the boredom of her everyday life she likes to go to the local music hall. During one of her visits she becomes infatuated with a new act, "Kitty Butler" played by the sexy Keely Hawes.
"Kittys" act entails dressing up as a man and singing popular music hall songs. "Nan" has never seen an act like this before and finds herself having feelings of attraction for "Kitty". She starts to go to the music hall every night just to see "Kitty". Eventually she is invited backstage to meet the object of her affection in person.
From there the story follows the two women's lives as they embark on a life touring the music halls around England with "Nan" initially the dresser for "Kitty" and eventually a part of the act on stage.
But as with all of Sarah Waters stories there are many twists and turns to their relationship and its eventual demise.
But the story does not end there. It continues to follow "Nan" as she struggles to come to terms with her feelings for women and the lost love of "Kitty". She comes to realize the fact that she can never return to her family in Whistable, and will have to find ways to live on the mean streets of London.
This was one of my favorite shows to make music videos for, and I have made 6 videos to date.
Please enjoy all of the videos and be sure to let me know what you think of them in the comments section, and don't forget to rate them.
